Week 1

1. Photo of the week: What impressed you to take it, select and write about this photo?

No images found.

I recently attended the Premier UNLV event, which was my first time going to a party at UNLV, and I found it incredibly impressive. There were so many activities to enjoy, like climbing walls, running challenges, and an energetic DJ party that kept everyone dancing and having fun. What stood out to me the most was the cheerleading performance—I was fascinated by their energy and skill. The whole experience was exciting and gave me a great introduction to the lively and dynamic campus culture at UNLV. I’m really looking forward to attending more events like this in the future

2. New person (outside of DASL) that you met? How did you or the person initiate the encounter, what made the encounter challenging or easy, and how did it help you?

I met some freshman and sophomore friends in the dormitory, which has been great for getting to know new people. Because of them, I’ve been able to do a lot of fun activities, like going to the wellness center to play basketball and visiting the Strip. They’ve also been really helpful, like when they took me to Target to buy some things I needed. It’s been really nice to have friends who can show me around and help me adjust to campus life.

3. What institutional or American/Vegas cultural insight did you learn this week?

Actually, I didn’t know much about American or Las Vegas culture or perspectives, but I’m trying to learn as much as possible. I can feel the energy of Las Vegas when I walk around the Strip. I was surprised by the casino culture in Las Vegas because I had never seen anything like it before.

4. What did you learn about yourself?

I think I need to learn more English. Sometimes, I feel like I’m good at speaking, but I realize I should practice speaking and learning English more. Sometimes, it goes well, but other times it doesn't. It’s especially hard to understand English spoken on the East Coast of America. I heard that people on the East Coast speak a little fast, but I was surprised when I actually heard it in real life

5. What is the status of your technical projects and what skills did you learn?

This is actually my first time working with robots and electronic circuits. Initially, I felt a bit overwhelmed, but I’ve started to learn a lot about how to read circuit diagrams and understand the systems that control a robot. I’ve been using a computer and various tutorials to guide me through the basics, step by step. Through this process, I’ve been able to pick up new skills, like understanding different components and how they interact in a circuit. Recently, I managed to turn on a face detection program, which was a big accomplishment for me. It’s exciting to see how much I’m learning and improving as I continue to work on these projects.
