Week 2

1. Photo of the week: What impressed you to take it, select and write about this photo?

I went to the UNLV vs. Utah Tech football game last Saturday. I was really looking forward to the game because it was the first football match I had ever attended. Fortunately, UNLV won against Utah Tech with a score of 72. Since I didn’t know much about football, I didn’t realize that scoring 72 points is not common in a football game. I think the game was a great experience for me because I could feel the American enthusiasm for football. I was also surprised by the players’ athletic abilities, which were far more impressive than I had imagined.

2. New person (outside of DASL) that you met? How did you or the person initiate the encounter, what made the encounter challenging or easy, and how did it help you?

I recently had the chance to meet Braden, one of my suite mates. It turns out that Braden works at the school gym, which was a fortunate coincidence for me. He took the time to show me around, explaining how to use the various equipment and making sure I knew about all the other facilities and conveniences the gym offers. It was really helpful to have someone guide me through it all, especially since I am still getting used to the new environment.

3. What institutional or American/Vegas cultural insight did you learn this week?

I decided to go out with suite mate, room mate and ended up at a country bar. That’s where Braden introduced me to the culture of country music in the United States. It was a unique experience to see how passionate people are about this genre, and Braden explained a lot about the history and significance of the music. He also taught me some of the traditional dances that go along with country songs. It was a fun and memorable evening, and I felt like I learned a lot not just about the music, but also about a part of American culture that I hadn’t experienced before.

4. What did you learn about yourself?

I am quickly adapting to listening to American English, but I still sometimes stumble during conversations because I can't think of the right words. I want to fix this quickly.

5. What is the status of your technical projects and what skills did you learn?

This week, rather than acquiring new skills, I was able to gain experience in looking more closely at circuits. I tried installing a new battery and tidying up the circuit. Although this field is not the one I want to pursue, I feel that I still need to study more in electronics.
