Week 5

Photo of the week

One of the best things about living in a Vegas for a month is the sunset views. Vegas has perfect conditions for beautiful sunset views, clear sky, no tall buildings. Watching the beautiful sky when leaving the lab has become a small joy in my daily routine. Also, I’m happy to be able to watch the sun set behind the vast, distant nature.

New person (outside of DASL) that you met

I went to my friend’s birthday party, and I met her family and friends there. I had the great experience of being invited to an American-style birthday party, where I got to feel the culture of an American home party.

What institutional of American/Vegas cultural insight did you learn this week?

Living in the U.S, I've noticed that the perception of age is different from that in Korea. In Korea, influenced by Confucianism, we use honorifics when speaking to elders, but in the U.S., age seems to be just a number. Perhaps that's why people here appear to engage in more casual and close conversations with older individuals. While this approach surely has its pros and cons, I personally think it's nice to build close relationships with older people.

What did you learn about yourself?

I discovered that I am adapting well to a culture different from Korea. From the language to the food, everything was unfamiliar at first, but now my dorm room feels as comfortable as home. Through this, I’ve learned that I am someone who can adjust well to new environments

What is the status of your technical projects and what skills did you learn?

I learned a lot this week, including laser cutting techniques, how to use a 3D printer, and took a C++ programming class. My modeling skills have improved, especially through modeling silicone mold and support for Zahir’s project. Additionally, through the C++ class, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of coding and computer syntax, a field I wasn’t particularly interested in before.
