Week 6

Photo of the week

On the way to buy a hamburger at night, I witnessed the police arresting a criminal. Even a police helicopter was dispatched, and there were more than six police cars. It seemed like the suspect was trying to escape, and witnessing the arrest right in front of me was a bit scary. I knew that the nights in the U.S. were more dangerous than those in Korea, but seeing it firsthand made it feel even more real Since safety is the top priority, I thought I should stay alert when walking around at night.

New person (outside of DASL) that you met

It seems like I meet new people in various situations, whether while walking down the street or in the elevator. The biggest difference from Korea seems to be the culture of small talk. In the U.S., people have conversations with strangers, ask how they're doing, give compliments, and then wish them a good day. At first, it felt a bit awkward, but I’ve come to like this culture of wishing well to strangers

What institutional of American/Vegas cultural insight did you learn this week?

Of course, people in Korea also enjoy their hobbies, but in the U.S., it seems like people express their passions more freely. What was particularly impressive was how people of all generations could enjoy and converse about hobbies like classic cars. As they shared the history of cars and their personal stories, I could feel their pride in their automobiles. It felt less like a simple exhibition and more like a space where people shared memories and connected with one another.

What did you learn about yourself?

Watching people who weren’t born in the U.S. but speak both English and their native language fluently, I thought it was impressive. Seeing them made me hope that my own children could be like that one day. Of course, learning a language is difficult, but once I learned, I believe it will be a huge help in the future.

What is the status of your technical projects and what skills did you learn?

I learned how to use various software like Unity and CAM. By becoming familiar with different software, I believe it will be a great help if I work on projects alone in the future. Additionally, while designing and printing a motor test bench, I directly realized important considerations during the design process, such as tolerances.
