Week 6 : Overcoming Technical Challenges with F1TENTH

Photo of the week

This photo captures the moment when I successfully configured the RC car's DC motors to move forward and backward using commands from the Jetson Nano. It symbolizes the hard work and problem-solving that went into making the car function as intended.

Getting the RC Car in Motion

This week was all about overcoming a significant technical challenge. The RC car we used was equipped with DC motors, but the dual FSESC 6.7 Pro was designed for BLDC motors. Despite this, I managed to configure the DC motors using the VESC Tool version 3.00, which supported firmware version 5.2—essential for our setup.

The configuration process required meticulous adjustments to the voltage, current, and duty cycle settings, as the battery was a 6S LiPo with 60V, while the motors operated at 14V. It was a time-consuming and challenging task, but ultimately, I was able to make it work. After the configuration, I connected the motors to the VESC using WAGO connectors, which Mali provided. Testing the setup and seeing the car move forward and backward under my control was incredibly rewarding.

Patience and Problem-Solving

Working through the motor configuration process taught me a lot about patience and problem-solving. I learned that even when faced with a setup that doesn’t initially align with the available hardware, there is often a way to make things work with enough persistence.

Testing and Documentation

After successfully configuring the car's motors and achieving the desired forward and backward motion, I documented the process and uploaded a video to YouTube. This was a crucial step in sharing my progress with the team and ensuring that the work could be referenced in the future. The week’s efforts not only advanced the F1TENTH project but also deepened my understanding of motor control and configuration in a practical setting.
