Week 7
1. Photo of the week: What impressed you to take it, select and write about this photo?
The photo above was taken at the end of a 2-night, 3-day camping trip at Cedar Breaks. During that time, I walked a long distance and had to rest in a tent at night, enduring the cold to prepare for the next day's hike. While it was great to experience nature up close, the journey was not easy and required perseverance. However, looking at the scenery at the final stretch gave me a strong sense of accomplishment, which is why I decided to share the photo.
2. New person (outside of DASL) that you met? How did you or the person initiate the encounter, what made the encounter challenging or easy, and how did it help you?
Last Thursday, I had the opportunity to meet a person named Kim Dong-bin. He had previously completed a Ph.D. at DASL, but I was already familiar with him before coming to the United States. This is because he worked in the same professor’s lab as I did, and the professor had mentioned him to me. He gave me advice on how I could make the most out of my time here and spoke to the people in the lab, encouraging them to look after me more closely. I felt especially grateful when I saw him addressing the lab members with constructive criticism to ensure that I could learn more from DASL.
3. What institutional or American/Vegas cultural insight did you learn this week?
Through the camping experience, I realized that Americans really enjoy camping and that the camping culture is highly developed in the United States.
4. What did you learn about yourself?
Through a camping class in their second semester at UNLV, I realized that I hadn't taken the time to reflect on myself for a long period. Carrying a 20-kilogram backpack and hiking about 30 kilometers in the mountains provided an opportunity for self-reflection. Although the backpack was heavy and the distance long, the experience allowed me to think about me recent efforts, accomplishments, and the importance of not giving up.
5. What is the status of your technical projects and what skills did you learn?
Last week, I created the telescopic pipe assembly ver.3. Additionally, I implemented equations in Matlab to visualize the momentum occurring at the end of the pipe and graphed it. Using this, I calculated the required torque for the motor. My next plan is to create a simulation to move it.
